Over the last few years a new Opening Day tradition has established itself here in Twins land. Breakfast on the Plaza has become a favorite way for Twins fans to start their day, and as you can see in the above photos Twins fans arrive in cars and on foot to pick up a free breakfast courtesy of the Twins. This year's menu included a hot dog, coffee, milk, potato chips and cereal bars. Breakfast of champions, indeed.
It was a fairly gloomy morning, and a bit chilly out, but there was a small band playing to help keep people's blood moving.
And in an Opening Day scene probably unique to Minnesota, fans in parkas and mittens sat at picnic tables and munched on their hot dogs. All of this was going on at eight o'clock in the morning.
Then, it started to snow. We're expecting up to eight inches of the stuff by game time.
Luckily, the next event of the day was scheduled for indoors at the IDS center where fans gathered at lunch time to celebrate with Twins players old and new.
First up on stage were Harmon Killebrew and Rod Carew, who assured the crowd that everyone had looked great in Spring Training.
Then, Ron Gardenhire, Pat Neshek, and Brendan Harris addressed the crowd, and answered questions ranging from Neshek's favorite pitch (fastball), whether Harris was enjoying his new team (yes), and how many times Gardy expected to be thrown out of games this year (none). No one believed him.
All in all, a fun way to spend some time and get excited about tonight's openibg game against the Angels. Let's play ball!
