What made it even better was that Adam Everett, who made an error Sunday that cost the Twins the game, hit a two-run homer against the Yankees.

And, to complete the circle of good news, the White Sox lost, so the Twins are in first place. At least for a day.

Apropos of yesterday’s blog about what a last-place team should be doing, let’s look at the Toronto Blue Jays, in a similar situation as the Mariners, if not nearly as dire. In last place in one of baseball’s toughest divisions, the 38-43 Jays canned manager John Gibbons on June 20, replacing him with veteran Cito Gaston.

arrogant, some would say traitorous, doctor.

Finally, miracles occurred and delivery was at hand. Adam Everett laid down a bunt as Mike Lamb broke off third towards home. A suicide squeeze! Thw Twins were ahead 4 - 3! And then the Cylons mysteriously broke off their attack, allowing the Fleet to escape and lick their wounds. Baltar survived an attempt on his life, and a young child recovered from what should have been a terminal illness.

more offense at second base, but he has yet to show it based on his performance in spring training. Adam Everett is a top defensive shortstop, but again, his potential offensive contributions are a real question mark. At third, Mike Lamb should provide more offense, but he's never played a full season as a regular player and it remains questionable whether he'll live up to the defensive standards the Twins usually expect from their fielders.

Meanwhile, this week the Twins did sign a couple of players. Adam Everett is a first-rate defensive shortstop who won't wow anyone with his hitting, but who should uphold the Twins' reputation for outstanding defense. Mike Lamb is expected to compete for the starting third baseman position, and with his hitting he could help shore up the bottom half of the order, which the Twins really need if they're going to compete with the likes of Detroit and Cleveland. If he works out, it will allow Nick Punto fill the utility infielder spot, a position he is much better suited for.
