Delmon Young

23 September 2008

Batting right behind him, Delmon Young went three for three with two runs and two RBIs.

Notes: Morneau set a Twins record with his 47th double.

Nick Punto and Carlos Gomez also had strong games. Punto went two for four with a run and an RBI and Gomez went two for four with an RBI.

Denard Span, Nick Punto and Delmon Young had two hits apiece. Young has been on a hot streak and boosted his average to .292.

The Twins have rebounded from an awful series in Seattle when they blew two leads and lost two of three to the woeful Mariners. They're six of eight since then, including two of three against the Yankees.

The Twins got a great start from Kevin Slowey, and Delmon Young's three-run jack was the difference in the team's 4-2 win.

Slowey allowed only three hits and one run in six innings, and the bullpen finished it off. Joe Nathan earned his 32nd save in 34 chances. Nathan, who has an ERA of 1.05.

Scott Baker didn't have a great outing, but it was good enough. Nor was the bullpen perfect, but it was up to the task.

wild pitch, but Justin Morneau grounded out to end the game.

Mauer, Brian Buscher and the red-hot Delmon Young had the Twins' only hits. I'm not surprised the Rangers scraped out a win in the series -- they're much improved -- but the 1-0 score is a shock. Both teams had been scoring plenty of runs.

Small ball? Forget it. The Twins hit four homers, one a titanic shot by Delmon Young.

In 35 games since June 1, Young is batting .350 with 10 doubles, four homers and 24 RBIs. Said Gardenhire of his homer to center field: "That just tells you how much he has inside of him."

You may remember he and Delmon Young were part of the deal that sent starter Matt Garza and shortstop Jason Bartlett to Tampa Bay. Everyone was quick to declare that deal a lopsided one in favor of the Rays, but you better hold on. The Rays, by the way, are in a funk right now, having lost five in a row and are down 7-0 against the Indians right now.

Boof Bonser (3-6, 6.50 ERA) no longer gets a pass based on his name alone.  Delmon Young has 3HRS and 35 RBIs, unacceptable numbers considering his ability.
Kansas City Royals- Poor KC. They’re one of two teams, by my logic, that go into each year knowing they have absolutely no shot (the other team being The Pirates). Its difficult to point out underachievers because, for the most part, this team is made up of guys who many felt couldn’t achieve to begin with. Of the few who have some expectations to live up to, Luke Hochevar (5.40 ERA) and Alex Gordon (.252 BA), have not come through.

Carlos Gomez had three hits and a run; Mauer had two hits, a run and two RBIs; Young three hits, a run and an RBI; Nick Punto two hits and an RBI; and Denard Span a hit and two runs.

Justin Morneau, Delmon Young, Brian Buscher, Brendan Harris and Alexi Casilla had hits in the inning.

If you watched the highlights of the game, you might be surprised that Mauer didn't run like a catcher. He scored from first on Morneau's double -- the guy can motor. (Remember he was rated a top quarterback prospect and had a scholarship offer from Florida State.

His average stands at .258 and he has 37 RBIs. Delmon Young upped his totals to .276, 24, but the latter number if inadequate. He needs to get going in the second half for the Twins to have any sort of success.

iriano has to come back and show flashes of his old stuff.

Second, key players such as Joe Mauer, Delmon Young, Craig Monroe and Jason Kubel have to hit for power consistently.

Third, the bullpen has to improve. It's been weaker than in the past. Joe Nathan's still great, but the setup guys have faltered.

The Twins need more from the DH posltion. Delmon Young needs to step it up. And Joe Mauer has to hit more homers. Michael Cuddyer needs to hit better than .253.

So the Twins lost a game vs. the Orioles when they couldn't hit and the bullpen wasn't quite up to snuff. The next night it was the pitching that was horrible, though it was a windy day when the balls were blowing out.

Neshek, won't help if the starters don't do well.

And after a game when both Michael Cuddyer and Delmon Young had strong games, both went hitless. The team doesn't seem to have much power, especially if Cuddyer and Young can't hit it out. And Jason Kubel needs to hit a lot better than .236. We loved that slam you hit a while back, but what have you done for us latel?

It's the eighth inning and the Minnesota Twins and Tampa bay rays are locked in a five all tie. The Twins have a runner on third with one out. Mike Lamb hits a fly ball that's tailing into the left field foul area when in a flash speedy Tampa Bay outfielder Carl Crawford comes running from his position and makes a great sliding catch. The only problem is he's in no position to make a throw, and delmon Young easilt tags up and scores the eventual winning run from third base.

Offensively, Justin Morneau and Delmon Young started to heat up, and Denard Span showed flashes of being able to hit at the major league level while filling in for Michael Cuddyer. The surprise of the season continues to be Matt Tolbert, who simply hits every time he's in the lineup.

In center, Carlos Gomez  is a question mark with the potential to be a plus player. Delmon Young is also new to the Twins, but his one year in the majors established him as a better than average player, and in Spring Training his arm and accuracy looked to be as good as anybody's, and better than most. The outfield, then, shows two pluses and a question mark.

the best stories emerging so far are probably the progress of Francisco Liriano, and the hiting of Delmon Young.

Going into today's action, Young was 8 for thirteen, (.615) with a homerun and four RBI's. The best part of that is he's hitting the ball to all fields, something that the Twins coaching staff may not have expected. That's an awfully good quality in a young hitter, especially one with some power. Being able to hit to the opposite field makes a hitter dangerous as a situational hitter, not just when the circumstances are right to pull the ball. If he can keep it up and carry that approach into the regular season, the Twins will be getting all they hoped for and more out of
