Francisco Liriano, 6-0 since being called up, pitched seven strong innings against the playoff-bound Rays. This was a must-win-situation against a good team. The Twins couldn't count on any help from the Royals, who managed to win only one game against the White Sox.

Francisco Liriano wasn't great, allowing five hits and three walks, but he was good enough against a weak-hitting Oakland lineup.

The winner was Francisco Liriano, who's had three solid starts since being recalled from AAA. On Friday he allowed no earned runs in seven innings.

That's not all. Francisco Liriano had a terrific return to the major leagues, allowing three hits and no runs in six innings. (One could ask why the Twins waited so long -- Livan Hernandez, who was designated for assignment, has had some awful starts lately. He lost the only game vs. the White Sox recentlly, and had a bad outing against the Indians that resulted in a loss.)

Callin up Francisco Liriano, who has been torching AAA and who won the game today, is akin to a trade for Minnesota, and should bolster an already strong rotation. Scott Baker has only given up more than three runs twice in his last ten starts, as has Nick Blackburn (giving up one or no runs in four of the other seven starts). Their defense is as solid as their offense, and they just seem to hang in there. Their team batting average of .277 is fourth overall (and third in the AL) while their strikeout total is fourth lowest in the AL.

The Twins have to be considering recalling Francisco Liriano from the minor leagues. He's been great, and Livan Hernandez has been lit up lately. The American League has figured him out.
How would these moves -- and the Tigers' trade of Pudge Rodriguez to the Yankees for Kyle Farnsworth -- affect the AL Central race?

Jason Kubel, Delmon Young and Alexi Casilla had outstanding games at the plate. Kubel went two for four with two runs and two RBIs; Young was four for four with an RBI and boosted his average to .294; Brian Buscher went two for four with two RBIs; Brendan Harris went two for four with an RBI; and Justin Morneau was one for three with two runs.

Going into today's action, Young was 8 for thirteen, (.615) with a homerun and four RBI's. The best part of that is he's hitting the ball to all fields, something that the Twins coaching staff may not have expected. That's an awfully good quality in a young hitter, especially one with some power. Being able to hit to the opposite field makes a hitter dangerous as a situational hitter, not just when the circumstances are right to pull the ball. If he can keep it up and carry that approach into the regular season, the Twins will be getting all they hoped for and more out of Delmon Young.

Francisco Liriano: Liriano threw well in batting practice on Sunday, and in what may be the best news for Twins fans so far this spring, is expected to pitch in a real game by the end of this week.
