That isn’t a Twins type of problem. Maybe Joe Mauer is out of the line up because he ate bad cheese curds but it isn’t reason to speculate he having an affair with a singer. Point to a player on the Twins who has been speculated of Steroids or HGH? Those are big team problems, those issues will destroy focus and crumple concentration.

Joe Mauer had the key hit in the five-run third inning, knocking in two with a single. Jason Kubel, Delmon Young and Brian Buscher had RBI singles in the inning. All those players have had big roles in the Twins' resurgence.

The Twins had to win in a way they're not used to -- hitting homers. Joe Mauer's power in the eighth inning, only his third of the year, was the decisive blow in the 7-6 Twins win. It was the third Twins' homer of the game -- Alexi Casilla and Jason Kubel went deep as well.

Minnesota scored six runs in the seventh, and it all started with a surprise -- Joe Mauer bunting for a hit. Justin Morneau, Delmon Young, Brian Buscher, Brendan Harris and Alexi Casilla had hits in the inning.

Joe Mauer had two hits and is now hitting .335 and rookie Brian Buscher was two for three with a run and two RBIs. Good job. Let's see you do it against a good team.

The win puts the Twins at .500, 36-36.
Slowey allowed only one run in six innings, and the performance of the Twins' young starters -- Slowey, Glen Perkins and Scott Baker -- gives Minnesota fans cause for hope, especially next year.

Second, key players such as Joe Mauer, Delmon Young, Craig Monroe and Jason Kubel have to hit for power consistently.
Third, the bullpen has to improve. It's been weaker than in the past. Joe Nathan's still great, but the setup guys have faltered.

So the Twins lost a game vs. the Orioles when they couldn't hit and the bullpen wasn't quite up to snuff. The next night it was the pitching that was horrible, though it was a windy day when the balls were blowing out.

What if Delmon Young started to drive in a few runs?
What if Joe Mauer started to hit with power?
What if Michael Cuddyer got hot?
What if the Twins overcome the hex the Yankees have had over them?

Instead, Carlos Gomez, Matt Tolbert and Joe Mauer strung together three of the worst at bats you'll ever see in a major league game. Gomez flailed wildly at three pitches out of the strike zone, Tolbert popped up in the infield, and Mauer watched a fastball go right down the middle of the plate for strike three.

A few thoughts on the first homestand of the season:
*Carlos Gomez is really fast, and has the potential to be the most dynamic lead-off hitter the Twins have ever had.
*The starting pitching held its own. Livan Hernandez is just as advertised, a veteran who knows how to keep hitters off-balance and should throw into the sixth or seventh inning pretty much every game. Scott Baker, Nick Blackburn, and Boof Bonser all pitched well, but too often found themselves behind early in the game.
