pport him.  Jason Kubel hit his 13th homer which keeps his 3rd place behind Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer.  Watching Jason Kubel hit home runs is like watching Lumberjack days.  He just cuts down trees to blast balls covering the fans with his white rocket.

ter with the Yankee-Torre divorce?

That isn’t a Twins type of problem.  Maybe Joe Mauer is out of the line up because he ate bad cheese curds but it isn’t reason to speculate he having an affair with a singer.  Point to a player on the Twins who has been speculated of Steroids or HGH?  Those are big team problems, those issues will destroy focus and crumple concentration.

Morneau, who's been on a tear, smacked a home run. Joe Mauer's hit tied the game in the seventh with Jason Kubel up. Yup, he followed in Morneau's footsteps with a three-run jack of his own. The Twins scored a few more in the eighth and that was that.

her heroes for the Twins are two of their players headed for the All-Star game in Yankee Stadium -- Joe Mauer, who hit a two-run homer, his fifth, and Joe Nathan, who struck out three in a dominating ninth inning. (That last half-inning was broadcast on Fox because the Arizona-Philadelphia game ended early. Nathan looked great -- one guy hit a couple of fouls and that was it. Whiff, walk, whiff, whiff.

Joe Mauer had the key hit in the five-run third inning, knocking in two with a single. Jason Kubel, Delmon Young and Brian Buscher had RBI singles in the inning. All those players have had big roles in the Twins' resurgence.

reat -- he was chased early.

The Twins had to win in a way they're not used to -- hitting homers. Joe Mauer's power in the eighth inning, only his third of the year, was the decisive blow in the 7-6 Twins win. It was the third Twins' homer of the game -- Alexi Casilla and Jason Kubel went deep as well.

Slowey allowed only one run in six innings, and the performance of the Twins' young starters -- Slowey, Glen Perkins and Scott Baker -- gives Minnesota fans cause for hope, especially next year.

Francisco Liriano has to come back and show flashes of his old stuff.

Second, key players such as Joe Mauer, Delmon Young, Craig Monroe and Jason Kubel have to hit for power consistently.

Third, the bullpen has to improve. It's been weaker than in the past. Joe Nathan's still great, but the setup guys have faltered.

The Twins need more from the DH posltion. Delmon Young needs to step it up. And Joe Mauer has to hit more homers. Michael Cuddyer needs to hit better than .253.

So the Twins lost a game vs. the Orioles when they couldn't hit and the bullpen wasn't quite up to snuff. The next night it was the pitching that was horrible, though it was a windy day when the balls were blowing out.

Instead, Carlos Gomez, Matt Tolbert and Joe Mauer strung together three of the worst at bats you'll ever see in a major league game. Gomez flailed wildly at three pitches out of the strike zone, Tolbert popped up in the infield, and Mauer watched a fastball go right down the middle of the plate for strike three.

A few thoughts on the first homestand of the season:

*Carlos Gomez is really fast, and has the potential to be the most dynamic lead-off hitter the Twins have ever had.

*The starting pitching held its own. Livan Hernandez is just as advertised, a veteran who knows how to keep hitters off-balance and should throw into the sixth or seventh inning pretty much every game. Scott Baker, Nick Blackburn, and Boof Bonser all pitched well, but too often found themselves behind early in the game.

Carlos Gomez  ruled the basepaths, stealing two bases and scoring a run. Joe Mauer picked up an RBI, Justine Morneau finally got a hit, a hope-stimulating opposite field single that carried with bit the bthought that his days of pulling off pitches were finally over. Gaius Baltar, rescued by a mysterious group of worshipful women, found himself wracked with self-doubt, a good thing for the normally arrogant, some would say traitorous, doctor.

He's a  double plus. Joe Mauer may be the best catcher in baseball. The rest of the infield, though, is all question marks. Brendan Harris may bring more offense at second base, but he has yet to show it based on his performance in spring training. Adam Everett is a top defensive shortstop, but again, his potential offensive contributions are a real question mark. At third, Mike Lamb should provide more offense, but he's never played a full season as a regular player and it remains questionable whether he'll live up to the defensive standards the Twins usually expect from their fielders.

n one to carry and offense and in Minnesota he was relieved of that burden the last couple years by Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau. I am skeptical that at 32 he is going to be able to sustain the numbers that he put up for the first time last season. On the other hand, if Casey Kotchman and Howie Kendrick (who will both be 25 this season) can develop into the hitters they are expected to be, and Juan Rivera can return to the form he showed before missing nearly all of last season due to an injury, the Angels offense instantly boasts more pop than they demonstrated last year.
