Nick Blackburn

30 September 2008

It was a close game throughout. Nick Blackburn pitched well for the Twins, John Denks was a little bit better for the White Sox.

Blackburn made one mistake, and Jim Thome made him pay with a homer. The Sox had only five hits, the Twins  two.

with two runs and an RBI; Brian Buscher, who went three for four with a run and an RBI; and starter Nick Blackburn, who allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings.

Maybe it was the day off Monday. The Twins had a brutal road trip and probably just got tired. (And ran into a team that's put it all together at the end of the year, the Jays.)

He's been playing great defense.

The Twins pitching was shaky in this series. Nick Blackburn allowed only three runs in six innings, and for once the bullpen gave up no runs -- thanks to Span.

Scott Baker has only given up more than three runs twice in his last ten starts, as has Nick Blackburn (giving up one or no runs in four of the other seven starts). Their defense is as solid as their offense, and they just seem to hang in there. Their team batting average of .277 is fourth overall (and third in the AL) while their strikeout total is fourth lowest in the AL.

The pen hasn't been quite as strong as in recent years.

Nick Blackburn had a terrific start, allowing just one run in seven innings.

Saturday's game was a laugher, as the Twins stomped on the Indians, 11-4. Brian Buscher had a career game, going three for five with a homer and five RBIs. Morneau was two for three with two runs, and Delmon Young went three for five with two runs and two RBIs. Kubel was two for four with a run and two RBIs.

But they took the final two games in the series, taking the finale in a laugher.

Nick Blackburn pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, and Jesse Crain and Boof Bonser completed the shutout against a team that had been hitting above .300 lately.

They were down 6-3 to a strong Milwaukee team. Twins starter Nick Blackburn wasn't great -- he was chased early.

The Twins had to win in a way they're not used to -- hitting homers. Joe Mauer's power in the eighth inning, only his third of the year, was the decisive blow in the 7-6 Twins win. It was the third Twins' homer of the game -- Alexi Casilla and Jason Kubel went deep as well.

Both the Diamondbacks and Dodgers lost.

Slowey lowered his ERA to 3.96 after his strong outing. Nick Blackburn's ERA is 3.68, Scott Baker's is 3.47 and Glen Perkins' is 4.39. They've all done well during the Twins' winning streak. And Livan Hernandez, who was supposed to be the ace of the stuff, has an ERA of 5.23. (The team has gotten some runs for him and he's 8-4.)

7 June 2008

it was the pitching that was horrible, though it was a windy day when the balls were blowing out.

Nick Blackburn had a terrible outing against the White Sox, giving up seven earned runs in four innings. Ouch.

2 June 2008

Nick Blackburn of the Twins was felled on Sunday by a line drive off the bat of Yankee Bobby Abreu, who's enough of a nice guy to show obvious distress as he ran to first. It's one of the greatest fears of any pitcher, as few have the instincts to get out of the way of a ball traveling 100+ MPH from fifty-five feet away (recall that the pitcher typically lands much closer to the plate than the sixty feet, six inches from the rubber to the plate).

dians 3 -0, snapping an eight game losing stral against the Indians that dated back to last season. Nick Blackburn pitched 7 and 2/3's shutout innings for his first win of the season. It was a stellar performance that should cement his place in the starting rotation.

7 April 2008

Scott Baker, Nick Blackburn, and Boof Bonser all pitched well, but too often found themselves behind early in the game.

*Which brings us to the offense. Gomez and Mauer are a nice combination at the top of the liheup, Morneau stepped up his slugging over the weekend. But the rest of the linup has so far shown a dearth of clutch hitting, and that's leading to playing from behind too often early in the season.

Where, oh where has the hitting gone...

The Twins found a pitcher last night. Nick Blackburn, in his first major league start, went seven innings, struck out six, walked one, and gave up only one run.

least two of the Twins young pitchers, a group that includes Bonser, Scott Baker, Kevin Slowey, and Nick Blackburn can emerge as reliable six to seven inning starters, it will go a long way to stabilizing the rotation, and protecting the bullpen, which figures to be one of the strengths of the team.
