Tarvaris Jackson

Now that #4 isn't in the equation, let's briefly talk about the Vikes options at QB.  #7 Vick, uh NOOOOOOO. After the Sex Boat and the fact it's JUST now fading into the sunset, Ziggy, if Chilly brings this to you, for godsakes, slap HIM.....

.

Reason number two the Vikings should sign Brett Favre is actually four reasons rolled into one: Tarvaris Jackson, Sage Rosenfels, Gus Frerotte, and John David Booty. It is a sad state of affairs at quarterback in Minnesota and has been really since the departure of Fran Tarkenton as a series of washed up has-beens and young never-will-bes have been paraded through in hopes of leading the Vikings back to the promised land. Frerotte has the most experience of the four, but at 39 years old hasn't accomplished nearly as much as Favre has at 40. Rosenfels has the next most experience in the group with a grand total of 32 games under center. Rosenfels however has never played more than nine games in one season, and has played more than six games just twice. Jackson has gone back and forth as the pet project of head coach Brad Childress and has seen more up than down in his young NFL career. Booty, who had a solid collegiate career has yet to throw a pass in a meaningful NFL game. The Vikings have a championship caliber team with star talent at every position on the field except the most important, at quarterback.

1st to my blogging fans.....I apologize for having a longer lapse between my entries.  I know, haha, some of you are waiting on the edge of you seat for every word I may write, lol.....yeah sure and now I will get over myself!!  Life has been busy and my store is taking off, so I won't complain about that and thank my lucky stars for it's fortune.  Now back to the Purple Crew;  latest news out of Chicago has some undisclosed (of course!!) Bears players not too happy with the fact of Jay Cutler not only not knowing who Sid Luckman is or was, but in his live press intro, he openly displayed the attitude of "whatever" toward the Bears icon.  Not good when it comes to the respect trait toward those that have come before him in the grand scheme of Bears country.  The reason I put this competitors thought in my Purple Crew speal is because the Bears ARE in our division.  Now, do I think Cutler will be able to impact the Purple's success?  Heck NO......the Bears offensive line isn't anything like what Denver's was or what our's is and with players such as JAllen, Culter will be seeing a lot of turf face to face.  Yes, Cutler is a mobile QB, but some of the DEs he will be facing are just as swift.  It is this bloggers opinion that Cutler will be lucky to get away with his health.

p>From what I have gathered during the 2008 season, there are two "camps" on the issue of Tarvaris Jackson as our starting QB: either you think he is still maturing and could become a good player, or you don't think he'll ever develop into a serviceable starter.  Personally, I find myself in the first camp.  I will admit that Jackson stunk in his rookie season of 2007 and even stunk as the anointed starter early in 2008 (before he was benched for Gus Frerotte), but the last few games of '08 he looked like a completely different QB.  His passes were on-target, he wasn't making boneheaded decisions, and he was scrambling not for his life, but in order to deliver big gains.  One or two games into his replacement of the injured Frerotte, I remarked that I hadn't been this excited about the Vikings' offense since Daunte Culpepper was heaving the rock to Randy Moss.  Of course, Tarvaris did stink in the playoff game against the Eagles, but one must remember that the Philly defense is perhaps the toughest in the NFC.  After the Vikes, the Giants couldn't do anything against them and only the Kurt Warner-Larry Fitzgerald combination could post any points (and that was only for about one half!).

nson and handing off to Chester Taylor (the last year of the Tice regime) was just as productive as Tarvaris Jackson throwing to Bernard Berrian and giving to Adrian Peterson.  Essentially, what I'm trying to say is that Childress has come nowhere near delivering the "kick-ass" offense he promised a few seasons ago.  Sure, the defense has been incredible, but Chilly lucked out in that regard (and was likely helped by the presence of Mike Tomlin, now Head Coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers), as the Wilfs had just doled out the money to Pat Williams, Antoine Winfield, and Darren Sharper, while Kevin Williams was becoming a major inside force.

e Vikings' stingy defense limited the Eagles to just three field goals (although an interception of Tarvaris Jackson by Asante Samuel gave them 16 points for the half).  On offense, the Vikings looked more than decent against a difficult-to-decipher Philly defense and got two Adrian Peterson runs for scores.

So, it's that simply...pressure McNabb and success will follow.

Of course, offensively, young QB Tarvaris Jackson will be severely tested by an Eagles defense that blitzes first and asks questions later.  From what I've seen from T-Jack of late, though, he should be able to avoid that pressure and find the open man (something that always exists against the Eagles D).  If Gus Frerotte were the starter right now, I would be praying for his safety, but Jackson has proven (over the past 3-4 games) his ability to scramble when necessary.

in) saved by some Longwell heroics, the Vikes played a much better game than the score indicated.

Tarvaris Jackson was 16/26 with 239 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT.  Adrian Peterson rushed for 103 yards on 21 carries.  Both Bobby Wade (98 yds) and Bernard Berrian (81 yards) turned in impressive performances.  Jackson's INT was also the only Vikings turnover lost in the contest.

While listening to some of the National Media types, it is obvious that most feel Brian Westbrook is going to run wild on the Purple Crew's defense.  I don't know that I buy that.  However, I do think that if the Purple shut down Westbrook, #5 is very capable of picking apart the Purple pass defense.  I think it is obvious that our only chance, should this scenario come to fruition, would be for our pass rush to come alive (as it has all season) and continually make #5 very uncomfortable.  I also don't think its enough to just make him feel uncomfortable, the Purple D need to make him eat some turf repeatedly, whether or not they get sacks.  Historically, that reduces #5's efficiency and effectiveness.

se played well early and late for the final (small) margin of 20-19.

The x-factor, as always, was Tarvaris Jackson. How would he play in a high-pressure situation?

Reasonably well. He had one horrible play, throwing an interception when the Vikings were in the red zone, but otherwise was OK. (You could tell how upset he was by that — he got a personal foul for tackling the interceptor out of bounds.)

Now that the horrific game against the Falcons is behind us, let's reflect.  Score wise it wasn't horrific, however the 5 fumbles wasn't so nice to watch.  When a true fan such as myself and all of you other Purple lovers out there watch a game that had our offense penetrating DEEP into Atlanta's territory, then continually turning over the ball.  Not only that, but doing that at home!!  I do not live in Mn and was fortunate enough to have my local TV station carry the game and I thought the fans at "The Dome" were very gracious with how long they took to "booo" the Purple.  Also, it is very rare that I think Booing is warranted from a fan to their team.  However, it is obvious that in the ONE game that the Vikes needed to come out fired up for, they came out FLATTER than a warm beer!  It was also obvious, aside from CB Griffin and Jared Allen, that the team was flat and not really caring about the fan's concern with performance at home.

working well until Adrian Peterson kept fumbling away possessions (he finished with 76 yards), but Tarvaris Jackson also added 76 yards on the ground by himself and looked as exciting as the prime years of Daunte Culpepper.  What impressed me the most about Jackson's scrambling, though, is that he wasn't just running around like a chicken with his head cut off...instead, he ran when he saw big yardage and scrambled to avoid pressure and deliver an on-target pass when needed.

Tarvaris Jackson played well except for a couple of fumbles. He threw for more than 200 yards and had two touchdowns.

Boy, that was a headline I never thought I would write...WANTING Tarvaris Jackson to be under center of a crucial, playoff-implication game!  At the beginning of the season, I was one of those fans calling for Gus Frerotte to replace the struggling Jackson, and even supported Rot with a post about a month ago on this very blog.  However, it became clear in that much-too-close game against the Lions that Gus Frerotte just isn't a very good quarterback any more.  Not only is he slow and prone to being sacked, but he also isn't careful enough with the ball (basically the premium task he is charged with) and throws many interceptions as well.  Basically, when Gus is under center the defense had to dominate for the Purple to get into the win column.  With T-Jack, the offense has a chance to stretch the field and get some aggressive scores (not lucky 99 yarders or screen passes).

rad Childress envisioned for this offense when he took over as Head Coach three years ago.  QB Tarvaris Jackson was smart with the ball AND made a heap of outstanding throws (a combination we had never seen from him until this point) to give the Vikings a lead, after which point they rode Adrian Peterson (165 yards) for the rest of the game.  Throw in the tremendous pressure that the defense put on Kurt Warner and the Arizona receivers, and a blowout was almost inevitable.

le to a whopping three points.  I know that I was one of the Purple fans calling for Gus after Tarvaris Jackson started off the season so poorly, but it is all too clear now that Gus is NOT the answer at QB for the Vikings.  Sadly, he probably is the best option going forward, but don't confuse that with his talent level.  He is completely immobile, takes too many huge hits, and throws just as many interceptions as Jackson ever did (if not more).

That said, the ugliest performance of them all belonged to Kevin McHale’s Tarvaris Jackson, Kevin Love. Love’s performance transcends any negative superlative. He played like the unimaginably unathletic, slow, boring, undersized doofus we all hoped he wouldn’t be. 24 minutes: 1/10 shooting, five boards and two turnovers. But it wasn’t the stats that raised eyebrows. It was the fact that he showed literally no ability to a) make a layup b) jump in any capacity whatsoever and c) keep up with anyone on defense. He was the absolute slowest player on the floor at all times. And that includes Aaron Gray. Love was atrocious. We’ve already tried the “big man with soft touch” with Rasho and Paul Grant. I want Kevin Love to be Tom Gugliotta. Simple as that. If this is what the team got for O.J. Mayo, who is currently averaging 17 a game in Memphis, chalk another one up for the GM.

Tarvaris Jackson:

Pros-A few years ago, T-Jack was exalted as the "QB of the future" for the Minnesota Vikings.  He has excellent mobility, great athleticism, and is the only QB on the roster with long-term potential (excluding John David Booty, whose time may only come way down the line yet).
